TotalEnergies Workforce Development Program in Yemen LNG

2015

Total’s $4.5 billion Yemen LNG project, which began operations in August 2005, was the major country’s investment. By 2015, the corporation hoped to have 90 percent of its employees Yemenized. Total established an integrated approach to recruit, train, retain, and inspire a world-class Yemeni workforce, all on extremely competitive regional employment terms and conditions.

Yemen LNG established training facilities to compensate for a lack of qualified local staff in LNG operations. These centers provide an intense, high-quality training program for technical specialists, engineers, and supervisors.

Total began an advertising push to gather applicants through radio, television, and the national press to fill that scheme. The organization chose 200 candidates from 16,000 applications for technical specialist positions.

The program began with a three-month intensive English course, followed by eight months of oil and gas technical training. Then there were 13 months of on-the-job training.

Yemen LNG eventually hired 82 engineers and supervisors out of 7,058 candidates for supervisory training levels. Many of the supervisory trainees for this level had gained experience and skills while working abroad. Total offered these expats attractive compensation packages to entice them to return home and participate in the LNG project’s development and operation.  Read More
